This department conducts study on fauna found in Sabah and cooperates with relevant institutions both inside and outside of Sabah in a particular research program. Among the activities that are conducted are as follows:

  1. Research on suggested areas to be reserved for conservation, recreation and so on.
  2. Organize scientific expeditions to habitats that have conservation value and endangered areas due to human exploitation activities.
  3.  Provides a reference list of species and also determine the criteria for priority species conservation. This is conducted from time to time on a regular basis.
  4. Start a breeding program which includes wildlife breeding and domestication of selected species.
  5. Collecting collections of gametes and embryos to be frozen for storage and for the use of 'artificial insemination' and/or 'embryo transfer'.
