Background

Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) was officially established on January 1st, 1988 as a department under the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Development at the time (now known as the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment) is responsible to the efforts of Conservation Enforcement of Wildlife, Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 and CITES (Conservation of International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna). Before, this department was in a division under the Forestry Department of Wildlife and Recreation from 1964 to 1987.
